What is the EU Framework Programme?
The European Union, an organisation of currently 27 European countries, works together in a variety of sectors, including common research activities. These research activities are grouped together in so-called multi-annual framework programmes. MoniQA is funded by the Sixth Framework Programme (or FP6) which covers the years 2002-2006. Its successor, the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), covers the years 2007-2013.

What else does the European Union do?
The EU traces its roots back to the Economic Coal and Steel Community and, later on, to the establishment of a common market for goods. Nowadays the European Union is active in almost all policy areas, ranging from agriculture, transport and health to regional policy, consumer protection and competition policy - to name but a few. However, the EU has different competences in the various areas, which are specified in the EU treaties. EU activities are described on the Europa website: www.europa.eu/index_en.htm
