MoniQA presented at the “Food for the 21st century” Conference

Dr. Roland E. Poms, Coordinator of the MoniQA Network of Excellence and ICC Secretary General, presented MoniQA results at the Conference Food for the 21st Century: The Impact of EU Research Upon European Food and Safety (Brussels, July 8, 2010).  

The one day conference, organised by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research (DG RTD), featured the results of the study "Assessing the overall impact of Priority 5-Food Quality and Safety under FP6" and presented eight EU funded projects grouped in different thematic areas (healthy production, healthier food, better quality and food integrity). The conference was opened by Maive Rute (Director, Directorate E, DG RTD) and also featured views from the industry, presented by Dr. Daniele Rossi Director General of the Italian Food and Drink Industry Federation and Vice Chairman of the European Technology Platform “Food for Life". It concluded with next steps in food research presented by Paola Testori Coggi, Director General of the EC Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO).

Monitoring and Quality Assurance in the Food Supply Chain: the MoniQA Contribution

 Roland E. Poms, Coordinator of the MoniQA NoE and Secretary General of ICC (International Association for Cereal Science and Technology) presented the impact of MoniQA research on its key stakeholder groups:

  • For research MoniQA provides opportunities for international collaboration and clusters (including a mobility programme) as well as access to new expertise and large infrastructure
  • For industry MoniQA provides sound scientific data (including a fully searchable Methods Database), validated methods and consultancy services (e.g. on HACCP, analytical methods and accreditation)
  • For consumers MoniQA provides easily accessible information (factsheets, website, multilingual information, public events) and ultimately safer foods
  • For policy makers MoniQA contributes to better future regulation (toolbox for socio-economic impact assessment, case studies on impact of regulation), provides data and advice and input on international standards

 

MoniQA (Monitoring and Quality Assurance in the total food supply chain) is an EU-funded Network of Excellence (NoE) which involves experts from around the globe collaborating to harmonise worldwide food quality and safety monitoring and control strategies. MoniQA focuses on the quality and reliability of tools and analytical methods to assure a high degree of safety and quality of foods with the main focus being on rapid methods and their applicability. The MoniQA project integrates key organisations across the food supply chain from around the world to find acceptable solutions for all stakeholders.
