MoniQA Events Review

MoniQA presented in Taiwan

The 2009 Annual Meeting of the Taiwan Association for Food Science and Technology (November 27, 2009) was combined with an international symposium on the Safety Assessment of Food Products and Processing and brought together 652 stakeholders from across the region. High level speakers included James S. B. Wu (President of Taiwan Association for Food Science and Technology), Yu-Tsai Huang (Deputy Minister, Council of Agriculture) and John Taylor (President, ICC and University of Pretoria, South Africa).  

MoniQA at the European Food Science Day

The European Food Science Day was held in Brussels on November 18, 2009 and brought together over 100 participants from a variety of stakeholders. Its aim was to widely disseminate the results of EU funded projects in the field of food and nutrition science. Speakers included high level representatives from the Commission and the European Parliament as well as from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries (CIAA) and the European Consumers’ Organisation.

MoniQA at Sci Com 2009

Daniel Spichtinger from the MoniQA Partner RTD Services (www.rtd-services.com) presented the MoniQA project and its communication strategy at the Sci Com 2009, an international conference on Science Communication, held in Vienna (November 16-17, 2009). Sci Com brings together all actors in science communication in order to enable an inter- and transdisciplinary exchange of views and experience. This year special attention was paid to communicating science to children and teenagers.

MoniQA at RAFA 2009

Prague, Czech Republic; 4-6 November 2009 In line with the previous RAFA conferences the focus of RAFA 2009 was on “recent advanced analytical and bioanalytical technologies and emerging food related applications“. The meeting was hosted by the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague (ICT Prague, Czech Republic), RIKILT – Institute of Food Safety (Wageningen, the Netherlands) and the International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEAC, Allschwil, Switzerland). Recent developments on the methodology on assessing the socio-economic impact of European food safety regulations

The half-day MoniQA-EC workshop entitled “Recent developments on the methodology on assessing the socio-economic impact of European food safety regulations” was held in Brussels on 20 October 2009. 18 representatives from various DGs (Enterprise, SANCO, Environment, including 1 representative from EFSA) and 11 colleagues from MoniQA attended the workshop.

MoniQA in the Asian Pacific Region

From the very beginning MoniQA was designed as a project with a truly global reach, bringing together partners from East and West. In September and October our consortium participated in and organised several events in China and Vietnam targeting stakeholders in the region.

MoniQA HCCP survey presented at COST 2030

Ainhoa Bilbao from our Spanish partner GAIKER presented MoniQA and the HACCP survey at the COST Foresight 2030 event in Bruge, Belgium (July 1, 2009).

Part of this event was a workshop on food security. The aim of this worshop was:

* to identify major trends and driving factors, and challenges resulting from them for a) Food Availability; b) Food Accessibility; c) Food Safety until 2030.
* to define potential future scenarios in Food Security focusing on a) Developed Countries – Europe in a globalised world and b) Developing Countries.

MoniQA presented in Greece

The MoniQA project was recently presented in Greece, at a specific Workshop held in Athens, Greece. The workshop was jointly organized by NTUA and QPLAN SA, both members of the MoniQA consortium. It took place on June 25, 2009 on the NTUA premises and brought together the Food Safety Certification Bodies in the country.

Food Allergens Working Group meeting in Hamburg

On 30./31. July 2009 the members of the MoniQA WG Food Allergens led by Bert Popping (Eurofins) and Clare Mills (IFR) met in Hamburg at Eurofins.

The members of the WG discussed the use of different methods for allergen detection focussed of the Mass spectrometry (MS) technique and the improvement of the extraction methods.

Food Allergens Working Group meets stakeholders in Vienna

The MoniQA Working Group Food Allergens led by Bert Pöpping (Eurofins) and Clare Mills (IFR) invited interested stakeholders from food industry, authorities, consumer organisations and method providers to participate in a special stakeholder event. The event was held in close connection to the EuroPrevall project meeting on May 14, 2009 in Vienna.
