The "Food Safety - Challenges and Opportunities Forum" (August 10-14, 2010, Chengdu, China) brought together more than 100 representatives from Asia and Europe. The forum was co-organized by MoniQA, the Chinese Journal of Preventive Medicine editorial committee, the Chinese Medical Association, the West China School of Public Health, Sichuan University and the Sichuan Nutrition Society. On behalf of MoniQA Dr Anton Alldrick (Campden BRI) acted as chairman for the opening session and Professor Lishi Zhang (West China School of Public Health, Sichuan University) gave the opening speech.
Dr. Alldrick also presented on "Food Safety Regulation in the European Union: Theory and Practice". Further presenters include Professor Xiaofang Pei (West China School of Public Health, Sichuan University ) who described the MoniQA melamine case study, Zhutian Wang, Yongning Wu, Rong Ji and Yongxiang Fan from the National Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety, Chinese CDC, Lu Ran from the Emergency Office of the Chinese CDC and Hing Man Chan from the University of Northern British Columbia. Topics discussed include food additives safety and management, food safety risk analysis, standard system of international food safety, food-borne diseases, food poisoning, research and control of tetrodotoxin poisoning, biological function and safety assessment of non-active ingredients of plant nutrients, and other issues
The participants considered the forum an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange and sharing between East and West and as a demonstration of the fruitful international collaboration achieved in the MoniQA Network of Excellence.
